April is Distracted Driver Awareness Month

by Jenn Tucci, MPH, RD

April is Distracted Driver Awareness Month. Distracted driving is any activity that could divert a person's attention away from the primary task of driving. But, because text messaging requires visual, manual, and cognitive attention from the driver, it is by far the most alarming distraction.  In fact, sending or receiving a text takes a driver’s eyes off the road for an average of 5 seconds.  Even drivers just talking on a cell phone have slower reaction times than drivers with a .08 blood alcohol content—the legal intoxication limit!  Make a commitment today that when the ignition is on, the phone is off.  For more information, go to http://www.distraction.gov
